The Beckhams appeared to be enjoying a blossoming friendship with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle once the former actress moved to London. But the cracks soon began to appear
They are two of the most famous couples in the world, who once had a close friendship. But relations between the Beckhams and the Sussexes appear to have soured significantly in recent years.
The quartet were initially said to be close, with David and Victoria keen to make Meghan feel welcome in the UK. In fact, there were reports that Victoria gave Meghan access to her little black book of her favorite hairdressers and stylists in London.
But this marked a turning point for the couples. When private details about their friendship – including Victoria’s offers of help – began to appear in the news, Meghan reportedly suspected that Victoria had ‘leaked’ them – sparking a ‘mortifying’ phone conversation between their husbands.
On the awkward exchange, a source told The Sun: “Harry was very polite, but it was obviously quite an awkward exchange and David was mortified. [Meghan] feared that Victoria was behind this – I mean, the idea that Victoria Beckham would personally call journalists to give them the scoop is ridiculous – and spoke to Harry about it.
“Harry is very protective of Meghan and decided to deal with the matter head on, contacting his good friend David directly. He quickly corrected Harry and the two men agreed to move on – but it certainly made things awkward for a while.”
In fact, David and Victoria were invited to attend Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May 2018 – but did not receive an invitation to the wedding dinner, which reportedly angered the couple.
Shortly afterwards, the royals set off on a tour of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, which coincided with the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney. Harry asked David to be an ambassador for the Invictus Games, with the former footballer traveling to the event.
But things turned sour when the prince refused to see David in Sydney. It was claimed that the reason Harry was keeping his friend at a distance was Meghan – who still feared Victoria was leaking stories about her to the press.
More recently, there have been signs that all is not well between the Sussexes and the Beckhams. In 2022, when David and Victoria’s eldest son Brooklyn married actress Nicola Peltz in a lavish Florida wedding, Harry and Meghan were nowhere to be found.
Similarly, last summer, when David welcomed soccer star Lionel Messi to his Inter Miami squad, a star-studded crowd attended his debut. But then again, the Sussexes weren’t there.
A major issue between the Sussexes and the Beckhams is thought to be David’s close connection with Prince William and King Charles.
Like Harry, William has known David and Victoria for many years and the Beckhams were at Westminster Abbey when he married Kate Middleton in 2011. In fact, Kate has worn a Victoria Beckham dress and sunglasses on outings in the past. And in 2022, David joined William and Kate when they traveled to Boston for the second annual Prince of Wales’s Earthshot Awards, where he presented one of the awards for one of William’s major projects.
David was also recently appointed King’s Foundation Ambassador by King Charles. In photos released to mark the announcement, the sports star was pictured with the king on the doorstep of Highgrove, Charles’s Gloucestershire retreat, and shown testing his carpentry skills with students from the foundation taking part in carpentry courses at the Snowdon School of Furniture.
The pair also swapped beekeeping tips, as they both have beehives, with David saying: “Having developed a love of the countryside, I am also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills, which are so central to the foundation’s work. hear from the King about the work of Her Majesty’s foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips!”
Earlier this week, the two men met again at the first King’s Foundation awards show at Buckingham Palace – and remained on very friendly terms as they talked football and discussed England’s chances at the Euro 2024 championship.
