Dinesen Apartment Reveals Pawson’s Minimalist Approach
John Pawson and his team intentionally did not receive a specific design brief from Dinesen. Instead, due to years of working together, Dinesen trusted Pawson’s uncompromising vision for the apartment and the result is a solution that boldly showcases the John Pawson and Dinesen brands’ shared dedication to craftsmanship, quality and a sense of peaceful tranquility through design. John Pawson comments on the new apartment saying: “Creating this apartment for Dinesen, as the natural home for the furniture pieces I designed, feels like completing a full circle.”
Combined with the building’s existing historic features, the vision of Pawson and his team reflects your architectural point of view in the best way. John Pawson is known for his minimal solutions in properties of any age and the apartment demonstrates his expertise in producing solutions that appear deceptively simple to the eye. John Pawson is a master of stylish hidden storage solutions for the functional needs required for everyday life, ensuring the space is clean, calm and ‘quiet’. As a residential space, practical functions are never denied; instead, Pawson merely wraps these needs in a veil of clever minimalism.

The placement of furniture in John Pawson’s design is not arbitrary. Each piece is intentionally positioned as a centerpiece, which adds a sense of thoughtfulness to the space. A subtle shelving solution is added along the edges of some of the very high ceilings to create classic John Pawson-style mood lighting, giving the space a tranquil atmosphere.
Hans Peter Dinesen, Fifth generation and Brand Director at Dinesen, comments: ‘In the same way that everything in the new Pawson furniture collection is reduced to the logic and poetry of wood, everything in John Pawson’s Dinesen apartment is refined back to the logic and poetry of spaces. Our vision was a space where people experience an instinctive ease and affinity with their physical surroundings, which is the essence of feeling at home.’

The living room, library and dining area, as well as the Layer kitchen by Garde Hvalsøe, they are conceived as a sequence of charged atmospheric volumes and thresholds. The kitchen style, designed by Baks Arkitekter for Hvalsøe GardenIt’s made in Dinesen Layers Oak with Hessian Invisible Oil and a steel countertop, which mirrors the countertop found in Pawson’s kitchen at Home Farm.
Dinesen used its entire range of flooring throughout the apartment, to carefully select and install the most suitable material for each individual space. The library is Herringbone Oak Classic with a White Oil finish; the living room is Douglas Classic in select widths and lye and white soap; the runner is Bond Oak Classic in Natural Oil; the kitchen is HeartOak in invisible oil; and the dining room is Classic Oak also in Invisible Oil.

All walls, ceilings and paneling are painted in a deliberately inviting shade of white called ‘Cotton’, created by Pawson for Danish company Bléo, while fabric screens and blinds gently diffuse the flow of natural light, which produces a distinctive glow. throughout the apartment. Various style objects were provided by the Belgian company Whenobjectswork. Items including glassware, crockery and cutlery were designed by John Pawson. All textiles and curtains are from the Danish textile company Kvadrat. In the living room, Pawson designed a bespoke textile wall that creates a small hallway along the rear office doors. All windows were fitted with Kvadrat Shade blinds, supplied by Kvadrat in Loa 0208.
Softly diffused lighting conditions were achieved throughout the space by brands such as Wonder Glass, who designed the floor and pendant lamps, both designed by John Pawson. The ceiling pendants are from Viabizuno by Peter Zumthor. Style lamps include the Holoscene No 04 and w223 Pawson, both designed by John Pawson for the Swedish lighting brand Wastberg. Special ambient lighting is provided by Anker & Co and is developed in partnership with John Pawson. O The focus of each visual field naturally falls on the sensorial richness of Dinesen wooden floors and furniture – revealing the subtlest details such as grain, color and tactile character.

Having previously collaborated on projects of various scales and types; including private homes, exhibitions, museums and chapels – John Pawson’s new furniture collection and Dinesen Apartment distill the spirit of the Danish word Effortwhich means going beyond what is expected or considered possible, as it expands this sense of progression that Dinesen and Pawson bring to their work.
The new furniture collection includes the Dining Series, which encompasses a dining table, bench and stool, a design that John Pawson designed in 1992. This design has been updated, adding a shadow gap detail in Dinesen Oak. The Lounge Series is a new complementary addition to the original Dining Series. Made from solid Douglas wood, it includes an armchair, seating table, sofa and sofa bed. Skilled local joiners built the wooden structure in Denmark, with upholstery from Danish textile company Kvadrat.
